Lorenz ID

The new EU ePrivacy Directive is a piece of leglislation that regulates, amongst other elements, whether or not a site is allowed to deposit a so-called "cookie" onto the machine of a user for identification purposes. The EU Directive came into force on 25th May 2011, yet EU countries have different interpretations of the law. They also have different timelines on when the EU Directive will pass into national law.

This makes it extremely difficult for website operators at this stage to identify technologies that may or may not pass the national - and possibly differing - laws of the various EU countries.

The Directive states that: "...Where such devices, for instance cookies, are intended for a legitimate purpose, such as to facilitate the provision of information society services, their use should be allowed on condition that users are provided with clear and precise information in accordance with Directive 95/46/EC about the purposes of cookies or similar devices so as to ensure that users are made aware of information being placed on the terminal equipment they are using..."

In order to use LORENZ ID, it is a necessity to deposit a cookie on your machine. The cookie does not in itself contain any identifying information about the user, but merely references a unique code to our servers from where we then identify whether you have or have not logged in. The code in the cookie itself will be useless to any other party that may or may not have access to your machine. This cookie does not track your usage of our website, it is merely intended to confirm that you have logged in. We also do not allow any third party cookies to be deposited, nor do we sell any information provided to us by yourselves in any form.

You can disable the use of cookies in your browser, but this would mean that you are no longer able to use LORENZ ID.

The LORENZ webserver is hosted in the United States, and is maintened by LORENZ International LLC in the United States. LORENZ does try and create as much transparency on the subject matter as possible.
